DPS Calculator: compare gear by kill time, not max hit
This DPS calculator is for OSRS players deciding whether an item swap, prayer, potion, or weapon actually makes a boss faster. Pick a setup and a target above: the useful answer is usually the loadout with the lower average time to kill, not the one with the largest yellow max-hit number.
What a DPS calculator tells you that max hit cannot
DPS combines damage, accuracy, and attack speed. In OSRS, one tick lasts 0.6 seconds, so a 4-tick weapon attacks every 2.4 seconds and a 5-tick weapon attacks every 3.0 seconds. At equal damage and accuracy, the 4-tick weapon makes 25% more attacks in the same time.
The practical calculation is DPS = average damage per attack / (attack speed in ticks × 0.6 seconds). That average includes misses, so an accuracy upgrade can beat a strength upgrade on a high-defence target. Time to kill then divides the target's Hitpoints by DPS. It is an average, not a promise for the next kill, because individual hits still use RNG.
DPS Calculator setup: choose gear, target, and combat assumptions
A useful OSRS DPS comparison changes one decision at a time. Start with the setup you already use, clone the important alternative into Loadout 2, and keep your levels, prayer, potion, and target the same. The result table then shows the percentage difference against Loadout 1 instead of making you do the arithmetic in your head.
- Equip the baseline. Use the slot picker or a preset, then select the attack style that the weapon actually uses.
- Choose the real boss or monster. Its Hitpoints, Defence, Magic level, size, and attributes load automatically.
- Open Combat settings only when needed. Confirm levels, prayer, potion, spell, Void, and relevant set effect before comparing.
- Judge the result by DPS and average TTK. A small DPS gain matters more on a long fight than on a low-HP slayer target.
Fair-comparison rule: do not compare a Piety + super combat setup with a no-prayer setup unless the choice you are testing is the consumable itself. The compact Combat settings summary above makes the active assumptions visible without forcing every input into the first screen.
DPS Calculator accuracy: why target defence changes the winner
There is no universal best weapon. A setup that wins on a low-defence monster can lose on a boss when its attack roll fails to clear the target's defence roll. That is why this DPS calculator uses the selected monster's style-specific defence rather than a generic difficulty label.
| If this changes | Check this result first | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Strength bonus or damage prayer | Max hit, then DPS | A higher ceiling helps only as often as your attacks land. |
| Accuracy bonus or attack level | Hit chance | Usually gains value as the target's defence rises. |
| Weapon speed | DPS and average TTK | Tick speed changes the number of chances to deal damage. |
| Target monster | All four headline metrics | Defence, Hitpoints, size, Magic, and attributes can change the winner. |
Use the DPS vs defence chart after the main result, not before it. It keeps your gear fixed and varies the target defence level, which makes defence breakpoints visible. The hit-distribution chart answers the separate question: how likely is each damage range, including a miss?
DPS Calculator mechanics modelled in this tool
Equipment data alone is not enough for high-level OSRS comparisons. The calculator surfaces an in-result note whenever one of the following mechanics changes the number, so a surprising result is explainable rather than a black box.
DPS Calculator limits and data sources
This is a sustained-DPS comparison tool. It does not simulate special attacks, player movement, phase changes, team damage, raid-room modifiers, or incoming damage. Treat it as the right answer for a stationary target under the assumptions shown above, then account for encounter mechanics separately.
Item and monster choices are searchable from the local game-data snapshot. The combat model uses effective levels, attack and defence rolls, attack speed, target attributes, and the mechanics listed above. For a second opinion or game-update context, check the primary community references below.
