Checkpoint table

Use checkpoints to plan a session or compare a grind with a clan mate. “Chance by checkpoint” includes every eligible roll from zero; “new chance” isolates only the next block.

Worked planning example: a 1/500 unique

Suppose a boss rolls the unique once per eligible kill. At 240 kills, the chance of having seen it is 1 - (499/500)^240 = 38.1%, so 61.9% of equally eligible accounts would still be empty-handed. Planning another 100 eligible kills is a separate question: that block has 1 - (499/500)^100 = 18.1% chance to contain the item, regardless of the earlier misses.

What the numbers support

Use the current-KC result to describe how unusual the completed streak is. Use the future-block result to decide whether another session fits your time and supply budget. Neither number says the next kill is “due”.

What must be checked first

If the source actually rolls per purple, point band or reward chest, 240 kills is the wrong input. Convert your activity into eligible rolls first, then keep the source condition beside any shared screenshot.

How to use the result in a real grind

Start with the correct roll

A listed rate is only useful when its denominator matches your activity. Boss pets often roll per kill, while raid uniques can be per purple or point-scaled reward. Entering completions for a per-purple table makes your chance look falsely low.

Separate past and future

Your current KC describes what has already happened. The future block answers a planning question: “If I do another 500 eligible rolls, what is the chance this block contains the item?” It does not add a pity timer to the next roll.

Expected is not promised

At 1/1,000, 2,000 rolls produce 2.0 expected drops, but zero is still possible. Expected value is a long-run average for budgeting time and supplies, not a guarantee for one account.

Compare options honestly

For two targets, calculate each chance separately. If you need either item, the combined probability is only independent when the rolls and tables are independent. Shared reward screens and points can break that assumption.

Drop-rate FAQ

Is a 1/X drop guaranteed at X KC?

No. At exactly X eligible rolls, the chance of at least one drop is about 63.2%. The remaining 36.8% are still dry.

What is different from the Dry Calculator?

This page compares several future KC checkpoints, expected drops and the chance in a fresh upcoming block. The Dry Calculator is focused on the emotional streak verdict and a one-roll simulator.

Should raids use kills or rewards?

Use the unit that the source table actually rolls: a purple, reward chest, point-scaled unique roll or completed kill. A raid completion count can be the wrong denominator.

Math uses independent Bernoulli rolls: 1 - (1 - 1/X)^n. Rates are a planning snapshot; verify task, difficulty, team and point conditions on the OSRS Wiki.
