ALLOY MATERIAL BUDGET
OSRS Giants' Foundry Calculator
Budget a 28-bar sword batch by metal type, current bar cost and your measured production pace. XP and quality stay tied to what happens in your run.
For 100 swords, enter 14 steel bars at 450 GP and 14 higher-tier bars at 1,800 GP. The batch uses 2,800 bars: 1,400 steel costing 630,000 GP and 1,400 higher-tier bars costing 2,520,000 GP, for 3,150,000 GP of material. At 12 swords per hour, the pace estimate is 8.3 hours. This is materials plus time only; rewards, coins, reputation and quality are excluded.
The 28-bar constraint makes the cost arithmetic easy to audit: swords Ă— (steel bars Ă— steel price + higher-tier bars Ă— higher-tier price). With the example prices, an all-steel sword budgets 12,600 GP in bars; a 14/14 sword budgets 31,500 GP. Over 100 swords, that is 1.26m versus 3.15m before any reward or coin return. The higher material budget may be justified by the quality and reward rules, but this calculator deliberately does not assume a fixed payout.
Measure your own batch
Run a small sample using the moulds and action rhythm you expect to use. Record start and end Smithing XP, completed swords, mistakes and elapsed time. Enter the observed XP per sword and swords per hour; the GP/XP result then uses your own execution instead of a made-up universal rate.
Keep prices and metal names specific
Use the price of the exact bar type in the higher-tier input. Rune, mithril, adamant and other bars have different costs and score differently in the activity; a single blended “higher-tier” price is only meaningful for the mix you actually plan to consume. Recheck the live quote before buying a large batch.
Why doesn't the tool estimate Smithing XP?
The hand-in reward depends on final sword quality: mould score plus metal score minus mistakes. Refinement actions also award XP, and sweet spots can double the next action's XP. This tool does not model mould choices or your actions, so it does not invent a quality or XP result.
What does the alloy comparison tell me?
It budgets the number and material cost of bars for full 28-bar swords, then applies your measured swords-per-hour pace. It does not score alloys, predict foundry reputation or include coin rewards.
How can I get a GP/XP figure?
Record the total Smithing XP gained over a representative batch in-game, then compare that result with the batch's material cost. Quality, mistakes, moulds and action execution affect your observed XP per sword.
The Foundry uses 28 bars per sword. Final hand-in XP is calculated from sword quality, which combines mould score, metal score and mistakes; refinement actions add separate XP. See the OSRS Wiki Giants' Foundry guide for the current quality and reward rules. Source reviewed 16 October 2026.
